In general members of a Community share a common interest or topic, community websites offer a lot of information and/or answers to questions about a certain topic. As the information on a community website is mainly focussed on one topic it is helpful to have a link on the topic related community websites to your website. First of all the refering website is often highly ranked in search engines and so they attract relevant visitors and visitors might click the link to your website. Secondly by having a link to your website you get pagerank from the referring site and so the link increases your pagerank (so your own ranking will increase in the search engines).
